Революция в Украйна?

. The EU is simply not as attractive as it used to be. The recession, the sovereign debt crisis, the backlash against enlargement, have taken the gloss out of its image. Unlike Central and Eastern Europe in the 1990s, Ukraine now has viable alternatives to following the West. These alternatives come not so much in the form of the dreaded Customs Union, but in trade and investment links with the growing economies of East Asia. The statist developmental model championed by China may be just as attractive to Ukraine as the liberal institutional one embodied by the EU. Speaking to Kiev from a position of undisputed strength no longer delivers the results that Brussels hopes for. Vilnius marked the limit of Western influence in the post-Soviet space. Instead of facing up to the inadequacies of its policy towards the region, the European Union chose to externalise the blame and project it on others. This may be comforting but is hardly a good basis on which to build close relations with neighbours. Ivaylo Gatev, Lecturer in European Politics at the University of Nottingham
