The Christ child was born in a barn, on straw, into utter poverty and destitution. This Christmas season let us read carefully this present text, so that the millions of children in the world today stunted for lack of food, homeless while we stay warm, working while we enjoy the profits from their products, may suffer no longer. This book answers all of those free market capitalists who believe they can also call themselves Catholics, or Christians, in any sense of the word. And oddly enough, this scholarly and correct critique comes to us from an Archbishop named Marx, writing in German. Recently interviewed by the prestigious Catholic journal 30 Giorni\'s September issue, Archbishop Marx responds: \'I don\'t understand how one can define oneself `neo-conservative\' and put all one\'s trust in the capitalist model.\' Declaring the European social welfare state the \"solution to the problem\" the Archbishop does not see how one can be Catholic and capitalist. The Archbishop praises the German model which pulled the nation through the economic downturn with \'insurance for the unemployed, benefits for those laid off, support for those with odd jobs, public health care.\' Gee, if we could only get health care, that would be a start! The thesis of this present study is, therefore: \'Capitalism without humanity, solidarity and the rule of law has no morality and no future.\' By this book the archbishop argues against what he defines as turbo-capitalism, the basically unregulated capitalism with limited social protection which has been the doom of most of the world\'s people. The Archbishop points out the ending of unions, the dropping of real value in wages, the loss of retail trade, and the huge gap between the super-rich few and the enormous populations of working poor. The Archbishop demonstrates that the disparities and injustices under which we now suffer will only increase under the globalization of the free market and free trade, benefiting the wealthy and hitting the poor hardest. The Archbishop explains capital is global and labor local, particularly under systems which restrict migration yet loosen the flow of capital out of countries. The Archbishop finds \'In this way the possibilities for investors, speculators and the conjurers of finance increase, while those who can count only on the work of their hands worsen.\' At long last we find here a truly pastoral and brilliant shepherd caring for his flock, who fortunately is also a longtime favorite of the Pope. http://www.amazon.com/Das-Kapital-Reinhard-Marx/dp/3629021557
